Millennial Shunning Manufacturing jobs.

Millenials are not thinking the way our parents are thinking right now. There has been a tremendous change in the lifestyle between the people born before and after the millennium. This generational gap is having very high impact on the way things are being done right now including how the job market is being conducted. The millennial prefer a more free stress free kind of life without rules and repetitive tasks which are so boring at times.

Just this past week an article by one of the largest media houses in the world stated that the construction enterprise is booming but employees have been missing. Apparently, IT jobs also are searching out certified workers due to the  excessive demand but qualified employees are still very few. Millennial were seen to consider IT jobs  than any other manual jobs like for example factory jobs like steel pipes manufacturers in China are having a problem attracting young people into the once coveted manufacturing job. Generation X and Y would rather choose more streamlined automation Industry.

During the 1950s to 1980s, talent units that hired tens of millions of people to join the manufacturing workforce but the ample workforce does not exist right now.These organizations are going day-to-day daily market these jobs day-to-day generation Y and if they’re smart generation Z. There can also even be a few Generation X who are inclined everyday retrain. This generational would rather do other jobs rather than construction and manufacturing jobs.So organizations are making the rounds day-to-day and university profession days in hopes of enticing young people into the construction and manufacturing jobs.

What I realize about Manufacturing and Construction jobs.

The whole thing I realize about production and construction jobs all came from the guys in my own family. For Gen X manufacturing jobs are inflexible and routine. For example those working in a construction painting business, You clock in, you do the paintings, you’re taking a ten- or 15-minute break, you pass back every day paintings, take a half-hour lunch, paintings a few extra, take an afternoon smash before heading home. There is no time for yourself any longer. Weekends may not be your personal if some extra gig comes along that promises greater than everyday shift can produce. You will end up working yourself up throughout the years  and by the time you can no longer do that, you are old and never had time for yourself and develop your own liking.

The nature of construction and manufacturing job is monotonous and flexible. There is also the working time, Generation X and Y being the outgoing type would rather choose other industries to work on, media being a better option for them. With the development of machinery in the construction and manufacturing sectors, we will be having more millennial brought back to the Industry, which of course would take sometime to realize.

Younger generation mobility trends

The late Dr. Lee Schipper, an internationally renowned researcher on the linkages between transport and climate change who co-founded EMBARQ in 2002, initiated a growing body of research that indicates an intriguing phenomenon – a recent stabilization, and in some cases a decline, of car use in the developed world. The stabilization of car use in cities is the main driver of this trend.

In many developing countries, rapid urbanization and economic growth are currently contributing to increased motorized travel in cities. It’s uncertain if cities in the developing world will follow the same pattern of motorization trends experienced in the developed world. An examination of changing urban transport behavior among younger generations in the developed world reveals a significant opportunity for policymakers in the developing world to leapfrog towards a more sustainable urban transport future.

Decreasing driving rates among younger generations

Several studies point to changing trends in urban transport consumption among younger generations in the developed world. Broadly, these trends reflect a shift in preferences from car ownership towards walking, biking, public transport, and shared mobility services.

Household travel survey data from the United States for 2001 to 2009 indicates that the average annual vehicle miles traveled by people aged 16 to 34 has decreased more drastically than in any other age group, from 10,300 to 7,900 miles – a drop of 23%. Further, data shows a decline in driving among young people who were employed and financially stable, indicating that lifestyle changes other than the global economic recession contributed to the decline. In Europe, car sales have been declining for many years, and one of the key reasons is changing preferences of younger generations.

In a comprehensive study of changes in the age composition of drivers in 15 countries, findings revealed that driving license rates among the younger generations declined significantly between the 1980s and late 2000s in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Germany, Japan, and Sweden.

Increased walking, biking, and public transport usage

Accompanying declining driving trends is a shift towards more walking, biking, and public transport trips. In the U.S., young people aged 16 to 34 made 16% more walking trips and 24% more bicycle trips in 2009 compared to 2001. Public transit usage by this group saw a 40% jump in the same period. Additionally, young people from affluent families, with incomes of over $70,000 per year, doubled their public transit usage and biking trips.

Comparatively, a recent European study found that public transport usage has increased among young adults aged 20 to 29 in France, Germany, the U.K., and Norway over the last few decades. It also found that the decrease in car travel by young adults was accompanied by a corresponding increase in the use of alternative modes in Germany and the U.K.

Acceptance of shared mobility services

Younger generations are also more likely to embrace the sharing economy compared to other age groups, due to their preference for “access over ownership” of resources. In a 2011 survey by Zipcar conducted in the U.S., people between the ages of 18 to 34 indicated the highest preference, 70%, for using alternate modes of transportation to the individually owned car, including public transport, car sharing, and carpooling.

In Europe, many German car manufacturers are turning their attention to carsharing in the hopes of reviving revenue, particularly by focusing on young German customers.

Factors driving urban transport trends among younger generations

So why are young people driving less and showing a greater preference for walking, biking, public transport, and shared mobility services? The answer might be tied to their location preferences, use of technology, and health and environmental awareness, as shown in this graphic supported by evidence from Sivak and Schoettle, Belden, Russonello & Stewart LLC, and Zipcar.

These key factors driving changing urban transport consumption patterns among younger generations in developed countries are driven more by fundamental shifts in lifestyle and preferences than short-term impacts like economic cycles and fuel prices. Given the major impact the travel choices of younger people can have on aggregate levels of motorization, it’s possible that motorization in developed economies may have already peaked – a ground breaking finding marking a fundamental change in the urban transport landscape of developed countries. Could this shift also be coming to the developing world? This possibility underscores the need to implement policies, programs, and investments in developing countries that promote sustainable transport and urban development without catering to traditional patterns of car-centric growth.

Alcohol in Moderation Strengthen Immune System

Alcohol has become a very vibrant part of our culture and lifestyle. With drunken people mostly kept in check by laws, we now are able to enjoy our alcohol to whatever extent we wish. But is that such a good thing? Maybe there should be a limit or maybe we should cut out alcohol from our diets?

 

Not completely of course; in fact it may be wise to keep a little bit of it in your diet. A recent study finds that by consuming moderate amounts of alcohol, like a glass of wine with dinner, you can boost your body’s immune system. The research suggests that moderate drinking may increase cardiovascular health as well as boosting immune functions to help fight off infections. Moderate consumption is considered around 2 drinks per day for men, and 1 drink for women.

The study found that heavy drinkers had diminished responses to a vaccine that was administered. As it turns out, those that consumed moderate amounts of alcohol also boasted an enhanced response to the administered vaccine in the study.

The author of the study, Ilhem Messaoudi, says:

If you have a family history of alcohol abuse, or are at risk, or have been an abuser in the past, we are not recommending you go out and drink to improve your immune system, but for the average person who has, say, a glass of wine with dinner, it does seem in general to improve health and cardiovascular function. And now we can add the immune system to that list.

Not such a bad idea seeing that there is a lot of sickness going around lately.
